Latin America advances in the development of packaging

In Latin America the development of packaging continues growing potentially; although it is true that the industry continues to advance, only a few countries have been leading this market, due to circumstances of the companies and the application of new materials and technologies.

“The development of packaging in some Latin American countries such as Colombia, Brazil, Chile and Argentina, is well positioned regard to the materials usage and the quality standards achieved throughout the value chain worldwide”, explains Juan Marletto, expert at the Argentine Packaging Institute (IAE), who will participate in Andina Pack 2019.

Flexible containers such as pouches and stand-up pouches are highlighted. According to Silvio Colombo, also an IAE expert: The challenge of containing, preserving, transporting and protecting have increased, especially in materials and their properties, in order to guarantee low wall thicknesses to facilitate further recycling and interaction with the environment.

Colombo also highlighted the following trends in packaging in different sectors:

- Lightening of weights in rigid containers.

- Use of alternative materials of renewable origin (bioplastics).

- Incorporation of resins of recyclable origin in conventional containers in the cosmetics, hygiene and toilet industries, home cleaning, etc.

- The gradual replacement of rigid containers with flexible, mainly in food products.

- Changes in the distribution and logistics packaging based on the development of e-commerce.

- Food containers with just rations to avoid food loss and waste.

- Intelligent packaging, communicating consumption experiences, nutritional values, limited promotions, through augmented reality or other associated technologies.

With 26 participants returns to Corferias the fifteenth edition of the Andina Pack fair, the only commercial platform in Latin America, training and experience of the packaging technologies, which year after year is consolidated as the ideal scenario for investors and entrepreneurs to find the best sector.

Doris Chingaté, which is Corferias project manager, reveals that In this new version there will be 526 exhibitors of which 53% are international, corresponding to delegations from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, China, South Korea, Canada, Chile, Spain, United States, Italy, Finland, France, Netherlands, India, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Czech Republic, Turkey and Venezuela.

During the four days of the fair, Andina Pack will have a rich academic agenda that will be developed based on the following themes: Regulatory Issues, Safety, Packaging, Innovation and Materials and Sustainability with the participation of national and international speakers.
